Innovative Angioplasty Workshop at Parumala Hospital

The Cardiology Department at Parumala Hospital recently organized a specialized workshop titled “Ultra Low Contrast OCT” on June 1st and 2nd, focusing on advanced angioplasty techniques for kidney patients. This event was officially inaugurated by His Grace Dr. Yuhanon Mar Chrysostomos, the Metropolitan of Niranam Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church.

The opening ceremony, chaired by the hospital’s CEO, Father M.C. Poulose, saw the participation of renowned cardiologists, including Dr. Sanjeev Roy (Director of Cardiology, Rukmani Birla Hospital, Jaipur), Dr. Shivaprasad K. (Head of Interventional Cardiology, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram), and Dr. Arun Gopi (Head of Electrophysiology, Metro Med International Cardiac Center, Kozhikode). Other notable attendees were Dr. Sherin Joseph, the Medical Superintendent of Parumala Hospital, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Ebin Varghese, Head of Cardiology Dr. Mahesh Nalin Kumar, and Senior Consultant Dr. George Koshi.

Traditionally, heart blockages are diagnosed by introducing contrast dye into the patient’s blood vessels. However, this method poses significant risks for patients with kidney disease, as the contrast dye can exacerbate existing kidney problems. The workshop introduced an innovative approach that uses minimal amounts of contrast dye, thus reducing the risk of post-procedure complications in these vulnerable patients.

The workshop provided a platform for cardiologists from across North India and various parts of Kerala to gain insights into these advanced techniques and the latest developments in the field. Dr. Mahesh Nalin Kumar and Dr. George Koshi served as course directors, leading the sessions alongside eminent cardiologists Dr. Sanjeev Roy, Dr. Shivaprasad K., and Dr. Arun Gopi. They conducted live angioplasties and case presentations, sharing their expertise and knowledge with the attendees.

Contributing to the success of the workshop were Parumala Hospital’s cardiology consultants Dr. Sanoop K.S., Dr. Joel J. Kandathil, and Dr. Arya Subhadra, who were integral members of the organizing committee.
