Rheumatology primarily deals with management of disorders of the joints and surrounding tissues – muscles, tendons, and ligaments, which are inflammatory in nature. It also caters to connective tissue diseases which are systemic and autoimmune in nature with the potential to affect multiple organ systems. There are more than 200 distinct rheumatological disorders and newer ones are being continuously discovered and described. Most rheumatological diseases have inflammation of autoimmune or other causes. Longer the inflammation stays uncontrolled, the more irreversible the damage it causes. Arthritis can lead to joint damage, deformities and disabilities. Diseases like lupus or vasculitis may lead to permanent damage and loss of function of kidneys, joints, digits, lung, heart, brain or any other organ in the body.
